Flex ONE Founder and CEO Joshua Chernikoff appeared on Charlotte’s WCNC-TV and Indianapolis station WTHR to talk about ways parents can prepare their kids for the upcoming school year. Watch the WCNC story here and the WTHR story here.
In previous years, parents had to contend with the “Summer Slide” – the loss of skills and content most students experience over summer vacation. But now, with schools relying on remote learning since last March, many students will have to overcome what experts are calling the “COVID Slide.”
Chernikoff told WCNS reporter Tanya Mendis that some experts believe that kids could lose as much as 30% of their reading skills and 50% of their math skills as a result of the COVID Slide. He said that many students have “lost the mindset of learning.”
He suggested tutoring to help bridge the gap and reduce the losses, and talked about Flex ONE’s team of “super tutors.”
Chernikoff also acknowledged that it’s summer, and kids should have fun, but they need to be ready when school starts. He suggested establishing a schedule and routine to get kids back in the right mindset.
Appearing on WTHR with news anchor Julia Moffitt, Chernikoff talked about students needing to get in academic shape and compared it to someone who hasn’t been working out for several months. “Imagine that you haven’t worked out for many months and you go back to the gym. You’re going to have to remake those muscles. That’s what kids are going to have to do,” he said.
Chernikoff offered some advice for finding a good tutor for your child, emphasizing safety first — parents should know who they are hiring, finding a tutor who is a good fit for your child, and letting the tutor do their job.
